Valiant Close, Sunderland
Valiant Close stands out as a unique collaborative initiative dedicated to enhancing the well-being, freedom, and independent living of individuals with physical disabilities. Comprising 17 bungalows, 16 of which are customised to individual needs, alongside an onsite centre and transportation services, the project operates cohesively to realise its central objectives. The completion of the project has notably elevated the quality of life for its residents. These bungalows boast Category Three wheelchair accessibility, meeting advanced needs while ensuring both comfort and functionality.
You enter in and out of the site via sweeping brick pier solid garden walls with trees popping up over the top. The solid entrance offers a distinct sense of arrival and neighbourhood cohesion and safety in and out of the secluded garden cul-de-sac development. Notable features include striking vaulted canopies at key visual lines on site. Strategically placed pockets of white render maximising natural light to an uplifting atmosphere. The roof design, intricately stitched together, forms an ornate and harmonious rooftop landscape that responds to the local topography. Elevations are accentuated by feature slot windows framing verdant views stitched together with simple yet effective brick band detailing harmonising a deceptively challenging development site.
The orientation of the bungalows ensures a balanced distribution of sunlight, while acoustic fencing maintains privacy from the adjacent busy road. The dwellings overlook a communal landscaped garden and featuring bespoke artwork, providing personalised living spaces for residents with physical disabilities. Each bungalow offers level-access patios and private garden areas, enhancing the sense of independence and well-being. Additionally, a concealed yet substantial garden allotment promotes shared enjoyment and growth for the project’s future.
In summary, Valiant Close exemplifies a holistic approach to promoting well-being and independence among individuals with physical disabilities. Through collaborative endeavours, customised living spaces, and accessible amenities, these have significantly enhanced the quality of life for residents which cultivates a strong sense of community and belonging.
