Stannington Hospital Site HERO

Stannington Hospital Site

The former St Mary’s asylum in Stannington was designed in 1914 by leading asylum architect GT Hine within magnificent landscaped grounds, now registered by English Heritage as being of Special Historic Interest. The NHS took over in 1948 and ran the hospital until the mid-1990’s when the site was put up for sale.

Bellway Homes and Rivergreen Developments, with JDDK Architects on their team, were successful bidders for the site, gaining outline planning permission in 2007, with the aspiration to create an exciting new community with commercial office spaces, a destination gastro pub as well as 177 high quality dwellings.

JDDK continued to work with Rivergreen on the development of the gastro pub St Mary’s Inn and the low environmental impact office development on the site, details of which are included in the “Leisure” and “Workspace” sections of our website. For Bellways, JDDK worked on their new build housing development where the site layout has created a unique atmosphere, that reflects the rural setting. The houses face onto car-free and shared external spaces which act as fingers of green reaching out to connect with the surrounding green landscape.
