Beacon Hill HERO REDUCED CROPPED

Private Home, Northumberland

JDDK Architects were appointed to develop designs for the development of a replacement two bedroom dwelling within an elevated but screened wooded plot in Beacon Hill, a hamlet two and a half miles south of Longhorsley, Northumberland. The existing lodge did not take full advantage of the spectacular views north of the Cheviots but was quite visually prominent from nearby roads. The design concept was therefore to create a new house which maximized views and light on the site while nestling into the woodland setting, based on sustainable principles. Our clients were keen to use recycled materials and had sourced a timber cruck frame from a previously demolished property. This frame has been aligned on the site with the gable facing north to maximise on the spectacular views, housing the entrance, the main living space, kitchen area and utility/ wc. There has also been scope to create a mezzanine area between the trusses above the utility/ wc  area to provide a guest bedroom space which also enjoys the views. The existing cruck frame is clad in timber with timber shingle roof while new copper covered dormer windows provide additional headspace to the mezzanine. Beyond the main frame there is a small contemporary extension in scorched timber, with flat green roof, which sits subservient to the main frame and houses the master bedroom with ensuite bathroom, both again with stunning views of the Cheviots. The house is situated to nestle in amongst existing trees and is screened by trees for both distant views and views within the site.
