Chester Royal Infirmary
The site holds a prominent position between the inner ring road and the historic city walls of Chester. JDDK delivered 106 dwellings in a mixture of townhouses, apartments and houses arranged around a series of courtyards of high quality landscaping.
Four storey apartments are placed adjacent to the ring road to create a sense of enclosure and buffer for the remaining site. There is a gradation of scale down to two storey houses facing the green landscaping around the city walls with the river beyond. This methodology was developed in careful consultation with the local planning authority to ensure a sensitive urban solution to this challenging site.
A publicly accessible landscaped thoroughfare was created through the heart of the site to both create a pedestrian link and to provide a sightline to the historic tower on the walls, seen at the end of the route.
The scheme was completed in 2001.
