St Oswald’s Hospice
JDDK became involved in this project in the early 1980’s as a result of an invited design competition organised by the RIBA. The practice has been continuously involved with St Oswald’s evolving building need ever since.
The scheme incorporates a 29 bed hospice with Day Care Centre and supporting facilities. The ground breaking design approach taken was firmly based on the wish to create the environment of a rambling country house rather than an institution.
The entrance is low key as it might be in a home, circulation spaces are bathed in daylight and there are numerous spaces to stop, rest, talk, or simply be alone, throughout the building. All bedrooms have views and direct access into the carefully designed gardens, offering the direct contact with nature that is scientifically proven to be beneficial to well being.
The client was aware that the atmosphere they wished to create—a peaceful and welcoming haven for those suffering from terminal illness and their families– could not be achieved through built form alone. JDDK’s brief therefore extended to many other aspects including interior design, furnishings, fabric, the selection of artworks and the co-ordination of specially crafted items such as the embroidered alter cloth, chapel silverware, stained glass and purpose made furniture.
