Planning Approval for New Homes at Prudhoe
Gentoo has received planning permission from Northumberland County Council for an ambitious redevelopment of 404 homes to be built on the 100 acre site of the former Prudhoe Hospital.
Designed by award-winning Newcastle architects, Jane Darbyshire and David Kendall (JDDK) Ltd, the £92 million pound scheme comprises of 392 new build properties ranging from two bedroom apartments to six bedroom detached executive homes, and 12 homes from the conversion of the historic Grade II listed Prudhoe Hall and adjacent stables.
With existing woodland surrounding the site to the north and southeast, the 100 acre site consists largely of the original designed landscape and parkland to the north and west of the Grade II listed Prudhoe Hall which was originally constructed around 1870 for the Liddell family before being acquired for use as Prudhoe Hospital.
JDDK Director, Nicky Watson, commented, “The scheme is a solution to a challenging brief which required us to design a high quality housing development in a manner that did not affect the openness of the Green Belt and that respected the setting of the historic buildings. The layout has been carefully designed to respond to the existing site topography and the historic landscape whilst retaining existing vistas, public rights of way and wildlife corridors across the site.”
“We’ve worked very closely with both Glen Kemp, the landscape consultants, and Gentoo to devise a scheme that will have a strong identity, maximise the amount of open public space and create several play areas set in the natural environment.”
“The homes themselves are a mix of properties available for private sale, discounted market value and affordable rent across a range of sizes varying from the apartments in the beautiful and historic Prudhoe Hall to new build six bedroom detached homes. The houses are carefully designed and located to make the best of the views from the site to the surrounding countryside and to ensure that each part of the development has its own distinct sense of place.”
David Thomas, Head of Technical at Gentoo, added, “We are absolutely delighted to have received Planning Permission for this superb scheme. This is a fantastic opportunity for Gentoo to develop what we consider to be the best development site in Northumberland over the next nine years.”
Construction work on the site is due to start this Autumn, securing some 140 full-time construction jobs, as well as a further 215 supply chain and related services roles.
